House built on rock

The teaching on the Sermon on the Mount is not only to be admired but ultimately to be obeyed. - R.T France
BUILT ON ROCK
2 accounts -Luke 6:46-45 / Matthew 7:24-27
V 24- Therefore (in Luke) in 7:24 refers to the preceding clarification (7:13–23), which justifies the generalizations Jesus made in 7:24–27. Anyone who knows of the coming trials and judgment (7:21–23) but ignores Jesus’ teaching is as foolish as a person who builds a house on sand.
It is not enough simply to hear Jesus’ call or even to respond with some temporary flurry of good deeds. Rather, we must build a solid foundation that combines authentic commitment to Christ with persevering obedience. In fact, often only in times of crisis can one’s faith be truly proven and a reminder that storms are on their way.
There is a difference between painting the outside of a piece of wood and soaking it in dye completely until it is saturated inside and out. The sermon on the mount is a call to complete and utter surrender.
Our foundation is about to be revealed. The parable of the two foundations is a call from Jesus himself to urge you onto obedience for what you just heard in the sermon.
Matthews version mentions that the man simply built his house on a rock while Luke makes it clear that the foundations are carefully dug out, painstakingly and thorough, a more eloborate account of the pain which he took. Luke mentions a house with a deep basement, common to the audience in which he was explaining.
v. 25
The storms that came had no effect on the house built on the rock foundation.
BOTH HOUSES TAKE A BEATING-
How much more can this house take- onlookers ask how the house has stayed up.
BUILT ON SAND
Everything aside from Christ is Sand – Matthew Henry (legalism and works righteousness is sand. Atheism, agnosticism, Nihilism, humanism, hedonism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam etc = Sand.
John 15:5- apart from me you can do nothing.
Job 8:15- He leans against his house but it does not stand, he lays hold of it but it does not endure.
V 26-27
Moros -
‘foolish, nonsensical, to be nonsense. ‘God (purposely) chose what the world considered to be nonsense in order to put wise men to shame’ 1 Cor 1:27. incoherent
Just as the world has no understanding of the gospel so the man who builds his house this way has no concept of architecture. The hearer who does not do is nonsensical.
It is possible in the Greek that there is here less indication of force necessary for the destruction. It appears that the house on the rock can withstand any storm while even the smallest storm would literally unravel the house built on the sand.
1.examine the structural flaws that caused three bridges to collapse. What natural forces might affect your bridge?
Bad Design
Faulty Construction-

1. Hypocrisy and legalism and external religion (stop doing it).

Ezekial 13:10-16

Matthew 23:26-27- You blind Pharisee, hypocrites. You clean the outside of the cup and plate and the inside is full of greed and self indulgence. First clean the inside of the plate and glass and the outsides will be clean. You are like whitewashed tombs which outwardly appear beautiful but inside are covered with dead men’s bones.

Graveyard illustration. What appears is not really what is.

A shop that advertises fervently may not have the inventory inside. A chrstians who appears one way might not ultimately have as strong a foundation as you might expect.

Pride- Be careful you stand lest you fall.

Foundation Failure-
a. . False teachers and prophets
b. Trusting in wealth

Extraordinary Loads- suffering/ financial hardships, death.

2.determine what factors need to be considered in building a stable structure, and What materials are most suitable for your bridge? Keep in mind wear and tear on the bridge, temperature, wind speed, and expense when making your decision.

3. compare and contrast the pros and cons of various bridge building material. –
even a small river will unravel the entire structure
Silver Bridge, Point Pleasant, West Virginia, 1967. In the worst bridge disaster in the history of the United States, 37 trucks and cars fell into the water when this bridge collapsed. The damage was caused by a broken I-bar, a small metal beam that connects the bridge’s different parts. As engineers found out later, one I-bar had a tiny crack at the time of construction; over time the wear and tear of weather and traffic broke the I-bar apart. Once one side of the bridge fell, the other side couldn’t handle the weight, so it collapsed too.

Melbourne Bridge, Melbourne, Australia, 1968. When constructing the bridge, engineers and architects made a simple mathematical error that resulted in an instability in the bridge’s steel girder box. When some of the steel expanded from heat, the bridge fell 120 feet to the ground.
The farthest thing from our thoughts is building for this world
Col 3.
Not only do we not build for this world but we count everything as loss for the sake of gaining Christ.
Luke 14:28
The first man was wise; the second man was foolish. The first man found stability and blessing in this life and in eternity; the second experienced calamity in this life and in eternity (the rain, floods, and winds can represent both hardships in this life and God’s final judgment
The embarrassment of a man who builds a house with his life savings and trusts its foundation for the livelihood of his wife and children When the house comes down, which it surely will, not only does the mans life earnings and investment come down, not only does he lose himself, but the consequences of his faulty decision making cause devestation and death on his family and in his neighborhood.
The Word of God –and the cross
Foundations and Anchors (75 tons) 150,000 lbs.
Diamond is the strongest stone on earth. It' is so strong, you can use it to cut glass.
He gave all on the foundational rock called golgatha. How much more can he take, that we face no storm that Christ has not been in. Calming the storm with his love.
