OT 5 Psalms
The prophets always speak judgment and comfort.
When Israel sins the prophets come and give a word of comfort and hope.
Sinless perfection and Spurgeon- stomped on is foot. Thus ending 3 months of sinless perfection.
Psalm 133- So much strife In the life of David. Sons, Saul, brothers. Longing for the unity of the brothers.
The anointing of oil represents the Spirit coming upon the people, Christos- anointed. Special anointing, precious oil on the head, coming down on the beard even Aarons beard The dew of Hermon, the snows from Mt. Hermon beginning there feed into Galilee. A well watered part of the country.
1. Wilderness- Like the service of the Priest. A priest puts away sin. The role of the priest is to absolve sin. Unity in confessing sins to one another. Forgiving and asking for forgiveness. Atone is to cover, but redeeming it. The people are unified under the role of the priest. Blessed are the peacemakers. Putting away sin, confronting it, spirit of humility and grace. Seek to restore or go to someone and confess.
2. Fertile part of the world.- The water comes from a Gentile region. There’s a unity also. God is causing his dews to fall on the unjust in order to bless the just.
3. The coming down of the Spirit is what reconciles.
Psalms of Zion 46-48-76
Psalm 46
Confidence in God who is the stronghold of the people
1. Refuge and strength, psalmist in sometime of trouble. This applies to all people who find themselves in trouble. Unknown place and unknown time, Job, universal message to all who suffer.
2. Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change- Isn’t fear natural for a man in times of trouble? Fear is a sensible appreciation of the challenges we are facing? We are not going to have phobic fear. Not based on own strength but on confidence in God. The love of God casts out fear. We have love and a sound mind.
3. Cosmic overthrow, techtonic upheaval. We woldn;t be afraid if the cosmic order would come to an end. The sound of chaos, imagining the greatest calamity so there is nothing to fear.
2nd stanza
4. God is in the midst of the heavens and he will not be moved. Lifting up his heart to imagine the New Jerusalem. God will help the city when morning dawns. Help to the believe always comes in the morning. When the shadows pass and the sun rises, early in the morning the resurrection.
What about the nations that assault the heavenly city that cannot be shaken?
5. The nations are considering attacking the heavenly city, but the Lord raised his voice and melted the earth. The littlest effort on God’s part is the complete destruction of the enemies of us. The God of Jacob is the stronghold. Confidence in the heavenly city cannot be shaken, makes negligible the tumult of this world. The Lord of hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is with us, he promises Jacob he will bring him home. The God of Jacob will bring us home safely. Confidence cannot be overthrown if it is in the heavenly city.
6. Behold the works of the Lord, bringing judgment on the earth. Wages war to bring peace. God wages war with the implements of war. The first time is with Noah when he sets his bow in the heavens. God has used the bow to slay the wicked but now aims it at nobody.
Cease striving and know that I am God. Going through life thinking of the things that are above. Confidence is in heaven. Romans 8- knowing that all things work together for good for those who love him and are called according to his purpose. God cannot be moved.
Psalm 48-
1. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, Zion is on a High mountain A city on a mountain is defensible. It is the most secure, and beautiful and the joy of the whole earth.
Measuring time by the stars, the season and constellations rotate around Polaris. Polaris is always in the same place entailing no movement; there is no measure of time, eternality. Heaven is towards the north. Phenomenological language. The ancients believed the earth reflected the heavens. Mt. Zion would be the fixed place on earth mimicking the heavens. Mt. Zion was believed to be fixed eternal. The north is not talking about eh north but Heavenly Zion.
Panic fixed those who took opposition to the city of Zion. Panic and anguish, the fear took over all the people. Maris, the greatest fear possible. God will establish Zion forever.
Walking around Jericho so they realized it could not be taken. Psalm 48- realizing heaven cannot be taken, it must be a gift of God. Confidence in this life will increase as well as faith by considering and imagining heaven. Do this in order to tell it to the next generation. Hope in the heavenly city that allowed the people to preserver in faith. Pass this on to the children of faith. Tell it to the next generation.

2. Lamentation- TRAGIC, Confession of sin, suffering, circumstance, petition of deliverance.
3. Acknowledgment- Comic, Praise of deliverance.
Psalm 117- Shortest Psalm
Praise the Lord begins it and ends it. A call to praise
Cause to Praise and a Call to praise.
Praise the Lord, ends as it began.
Psalm 113
Who is to Praise him, the servants are to praise, those already in faith.
From the rising of the sun to the setting, the people of God are all over the place. God is high above all nations. Glory above the heavens, who is like the Lord our God. The Lord humbles himself to see the things that take place on the earth. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. He takes those of no repute and lifts them with the princes of the people.
The church draws all men and makes them all equal. They are themselves made royal.
1. He makes the barren woman sit in the house as the mother of children. Redemption, taking the barren and making her the mother of children
2. The Lord humbles himself from on high to come and give comfort to those who are cast down. Celebrating God’s grace and eternality.
Psalm 33- A praise song, a song of singing.
You would only praise if you had been graciously made upright. Those have cause for singing and for praise. Young Christians are not being taught that they have been saved by grace, but by choice. This is why they cannot properly praise.
New Song- Redemption
Celebrates his attributes and than his work in creation.
Psalm 136
Calling upon the people to praise God. This is not mindless repetition, it is a heart attitude A song of praise. Carries you away with God and who he is, his person and his work.
Tragic Psalms
Psalms 142
The cave is the realm of death. The cave is a cavity, buried, in the bowels of the earth. Lamenting Psalms always begin with a turning to God.

A statement of petition and than a confidence that God will deliver him
Even though he is in a desperate hour the Lord is his refuge. Praying that God will deliver him, so that I may give thanks. Obligation to give thanks when God answers your prayer What is emerging is a cycle. Publicly acknowledge God so it encourages the faith of others and praises God.

4. Without deliverance there can be no thanks.

Telling the people that God has delivered him. Encouraging and delivering
TODAH- acknowledging that he asked God and was delivered.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivers them out of them all. No need to give up hope because the Lord will deliver them all.
Psalm 116
Delivered from desperate discouragement. What can we return to him for all of his benefits. Giving thanks in the temple, public acknowledgement.

Many will hear and follow the Lord. Cycle of Praise in Israel.
1. The Praise of God is the most fundamental thing. Doxological. The Psalms are showing us how to Praise God. Attributes, Character, works in history, Creation, Redemption, Glorification. We Praise him for his person and his work. Never timebound, always appropriate Uplifting and appropriate.
2. Sorrow in this life, sometimes from our fault and sometimes not. Half the Psalms are Pslams of lament. Characteristic of the people of God. They cry out to God and rehears the lamentable state telling of what it is that is represing them. They promise to praise him and than God arouses himself from the throne and intervenes to deliver the saints. He puts him upon the rock and sits them at the table among princes. The saint acknowledges God’s goodness publically. That which was bad has become good. Deliverance from that which oppressed him.
There are times when you want to rejoice and there are times to sing lamentations. Ending on acknowledgment, end giving them hope. Praise, Lament, Acknowledge We will preserver in victory , no reason to fear but every reason to rejoice. This is worship in Israel.
The shadow of God’s wings, God is an eagle that goes ahead of his people.
